Farmers in Yei County, Central Equatoria state have shipped over 10 metric tonnes of coffee to the global market. The shipment from over 3,000 growers is the second after 1.6 metric tonnes was exported last year to the market.

The farmers in Yei are being supported by the American based NGO Techno Serve, which has an office in Yei, and trains local farmers.

Speaking to media in Yei, the Assistant Commissioner for Agriculture in Yei County, Edmond Gogo, says they plan to expand their farms with the export earnings.

Gogo explained the secret behind the successful coffee business that can be economic power to many farmers in the Country.

“When the analyses were done in the laboratories in Geneva, South Sudan coffee became the best coffee in the world...Secondly, during the processing methods you have to make sure it is the ready quality coffee. You maintain the level and take the consistency in actually managing the drying methods.”

Last year’s exports encouraged farmers in Yei and other parts of the country. South Sudan is an agricultural country that can export thousands of metric tonnes of food if it introduces mechanized agricultural farming.

Currently, the country depends so much on imported food from East Africa. This is because of insecurity and lack of infrastructure which hinders people from farming.
