National Assembly forms committee to investigate Maridi fuel tanker explosion

[Juba, South Sudan, TCT] The National Legislative Assembly (NLA), chaired by the Honorable Speaker Manasseh Magok Rundial, set up a fact-finding committee on Monday  to investigate the cause of a fuel tanker explosion in Maridi last week.

Speaking to TCT at the parliamentary building, Honorable Magok said he informed the August house that he had received an urgent motion that morning from Honorable Justin Maruon, in relation to the incident.. The motion expresses that the August house must do something in this very unfortunate incident that caused many deaths, and was a big loss to the nation and particularly to the people of Western Equatoria State. 

“This is a sad incident that needs urgent deliberation and action without delay,” said Magok.

In response, the August house immediately formed an investigating committee that will go to the scene and find the facts. The leadership of the Assembly will facilitate the committee to the field, and into the county with adequate resources that will enable the members gets exact information on what cause the explosion, which killed nearly 200 people and wounded more than 100.

In addressing Assembly, speaker Magok told members that only the members from the area are going to go with committee members immediately after receiving support.

The high loss of lives is yet to be reported by the local authorities from the ground. The wounded victims from the fuel explosion are continuously being airlifted to Juba teaching hospitals after both the Maridi County private and government health centers were overwhelmed by the number of patients with critical wounds. National and State Governments have declared three days of mourning on Thursday and Friday as the way to give respect to human life lost in the country.

The incident was caused after a patrol fuel tanker veered off road, overturned and a member of the crowd scooping leaking fuel lit his cigarette the patrol caught fire.
