The Wau Chamber of Commerce has announced a drop in the price of foods and other commodities in Wau town, Western Bahr El-Ghazal state.

The Wau Chamber of Commerce has announced a drop in the price of foods and other commodities in Wau town, Western Bahr El-Ghazal state.

Natale Paul Mere, Secretary General for the Chamber told the media the prices have fallen despite the rise in the dollar exchange rate and shortage of fuel in the town. He says the state governor has given 2,500,000 dollars to the Chamber of Commerce to import some basic commodities.

“In October and November there was a sharp increase in prices, but today there is a drop in prices. Flour went from 470 and it is 320 South Sudanese pounds today per a bag. A bag of sugar cost 260 while a liter of diesel is at nine pounds and petrol at 10 pounds…The state governor has offered $25,000 for food commodities, fuel and building material - $50,000 for building materials, $10,000 for food commodities, and $10,000 for fuel,” he said.

South Sudan has experience sharp rise in fuel shortage late this year. Lack of dollars in the market has affected the import business because commodities are imported from neighboring countries and businessmen use dollars to purchase goods.

The dollar has become expensive in the black market making prices shoot up in most towns in South Sudan. Another factor that is driving up prices in some states is bad roads which make goods to delay or get damaged before reaching the intended markets
