President Kiir finally signs peace

The regional leaders who witnessed President Kiir signing include Prime Minister Halie Mariam of Ethiopia, Chairperson of IGAD General Assembly of Heads of State and Governments, President Uhuru Kenyatta of Kenya, the Rapporteur of IGAD General Assembly, President Yoweri Museveni of Uganda and the First Vice President of Sudan General Bakeri Hassan Saleh amongst other senior dignitaries.

The government signed the compromised peace agreement with great reservations as mention by President in his remarks.

“I want you regional leaders not to leave us alone, if you leave us with this agreement we will spoil it”, Kiir said.

President Uhuru Kenyatta in his remarks urged South Sudanese to leave behind the times of fighting with all the bad, but to invest on the times that peace is the main commodity they need.

“South Sudanese need peace more than war, they need development” said Kenyatta.

Prime Minister Halie Mariam also said South Sudanese fought so many wars for so long and they do not need another war. He said having this peace agreement would help South Sudan unite and work for the development of their nation.

In his remarks, President Yoweri Museveni said that this agreement marks the end of unjust war amongst South Sudanese. He congratulated President Salva Kiir and Riek Machar, the rebel leader as well as the IGAD Plus and negotiating teams for the efforts exerted to reach the compromised peace agreement.

On the other hand, critics are saying the implementation of this peace agreement is critical.

“The fear is not signing the agreement but we are not convinced that the warring parties will implement the agreement in good faith” said a youth leader who spoke on request of anonymity. 

The mood in Juba was normal as Freedom Hall was packed with dignitaries and leaders to witness signing of peace by President Kiir, while public were at normal business and no sign of happiness or sadness observed.

While the signing of compromise peace agreement is taking place in Juba, the rebel forces are reported having attacked government positions in Magwi County in Eastern Equartoria State.
