South Sudan to commemorate World Press Freedom Day in Juba

Union of Journalists of South Sudan or UJOSS, Association of Media Development in South Sudan or AMDISS and the National Editors Forum in collaboration with United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization or UNESCO is organizing the World Press Freedom Day celebration in Juba.
 
The Day under the theme “Advocating for media safety, freedom of expression and gender equality in the media” aims at advocating for freedom of the press and safety of journalists in South Sudan.
 
The Day to be commemorated with a conference on Monday and Tuesday because May 3rd falls on Sunday is projected to bring together 200 participants from all states.
 
Five media experts including Media Institute of Southern Africa, Media Council of Kenya, Uganda Journalists Union, Gurtong Media Owner based in UK, Sherry Ricchiardi, PhD award-winning journalist and media development specialist are expected to attend the event.
 
The conference would discuss conditions for fostering an enabling environment for freedom of expression, freedom of information and press in South Sudan and drawing regional and global best practices on media development, freedom of expression and access to information.
 
It is also expected to dwell on the role of the media in conflict management, peace building, safety and security of journalists and fight against impunity.
 
Other topics include promoting gender and youth equality through media and enhancement of better understanding on the role of the media and establishing national media development strategy with lessons learnt from different countries.
 
A number of Ambassadors and other partners confirmed their participation and support to the media sector activities in South Sudan.
